Learning by Heart

Corita Kent and Jan Steward

Kent C. and Steward J. (2008, second edition). Learning by heart, teachings to free the creative spirit. Allworth Press New York. Originally published by Bantam Books, New York, 1992.

In my projects, I work very hard on structures within which students can work – structures that will be supporting enough – a kind of scaffolding. The structure should stand high enough to paint those parts of the building they want to paint and it should not restrict how they should paint it. And when they finish, the structure should be dismantled and put away…perhaps to be reused in another form at another time.

Uit de inleiding van het boek:

‘Corita often quoted the Balinese who said: “We have no art, we do everything as well as we can.” Based on that assumption, Corita developed an art education system in which the classroom and its multiple surroundings are the visual tools for learning and making. Now, with the new edition of Learning By Heart readers can rediscover Kent and Steward’s uncannily simple methodology: begin, look, connect & create, work & play, celebrate! The author’s insistence that creativity is based on the close observation of the ordinary and that art cannot be learned except by the heart are primary tools for anyone interested in living, working, and playing creatively.’
