‘The following talks and fragments of writing have in common that they all grew out of attempts to put into language things about dance and performance that are slippery or hard to articulate. Many of the observations and experiences described are subjective, coming from one person’s perspective, but my hope is that these reflections will resonate in some way in relation to other people’s perspectives and other experiences of dancing and performing.’
A Choreographer’s Handbook van Burrows verscheen tien jaar eerder dan dit nieuwe kleinood. Net zoals toen verzamelt Burrows eigen beschouwingen, oefeningen, reflecties en vaststellingen over het werken aan voorstellingen. In nieuwe korte (en langere) quotes, verzameld onder sprekende titels zoals “research”, “audience” of “freedom” neemt Burrows je mee naar de repetitieruimte van de choreograaf, de danser, of de performer en geeft hij opnieuw een unieke inkijk in zijn praktijk. Op die manier biedt hij ook hier inzicht in de verschillende aspecten van het creatieproces en geeft hij indirect ook inspiratie voor hen die deze processen begeleiden.
